We believe that the histories, stories, and voices We believe that the histories, stories, and voices of Black people should be centered, honored, and uplifted in school curricula every day. As we enter February, the Center for Racial Justice in Education is providing resources to be used beyond the scope of this one month. Unless Black history is taught throughout the year, it perpetuates an “othering” of Black Lives and Black students, and is also a manifestation of anti-blackness. Ensuring the ongoing integration of Black history and experiences throughout all curriculum is imperative as educators continue to uplift every student and reinforce that #BlackLivesMatter everyday. #3K2023 | Celebrate Three Kings Day with El Museo this Friday, January 6th! Returning once again to the streets of El Barrio (East Harlem) with live musical performances by @bombayony @fogoazulny @aaabeans and more! This year’s Celebration gives space and focus on the importance of mental health and wellness, in light of national political and health occurrences these past few years. Join us on this joyous day in celebration of life and culture, featuring camels (live), colorful puppets, parrandas, music and dancing! For more info visit elmuseo.org/3K2023 This year’s Three Kings Poster image was created by Puerto Rican artist and writer Tanya Torres @artbytanyatorres. As stated by the artist: “This year, by illustrating the Three Kings in a playful and colorful way, I offer this gift to all the children in this tough and beloved city. This is my home, my street, some moments of my life when the Three Kings were present in my heart and the in the hearts of the people whom I’ve met in the same place where the Three Kings reminded me of myself, where they left me their gifts that I now share in this image.” – Tanya Torres To learn more about the artist and to download poster visit www.elmuseo.org/3K2023

Many educators believe they are offering a balance Many educators believe they are offering a balance when it comes to acknowledging holidays, but Christmas continues to receive the greatest emphasis. "Avoiding the Holiday 'Balance Traps'" by Learning From Justice offers suggestions for educators. As 2022 draws to a close and we head into the new As 2022 draws to a close and we head into the new year, we reflect on how transformation requires courage, intention and community in order to imagine a new and liberated future as distinct from our past. We envision a world where all young people learn and thrive in racially equitable, liberating, and empowering educational spaces. Through initiatives like the Baker-Butler program, our youth-adult partnership inspired by Ella Baker and Octavia Butler, we support educators and youth in creating the answers for their own communities. How will you choose to be the answer next year, and beyond? Slide 1 quote from “A Few Rules for Predicting the Future” by Octavia Butler at Common Change. We're excited to share this month's book recommend We're excited to share this month's book recommendations by CRJE staff! Lawrenzo, our Program Manager, is reading "Invisible Women" by @ccriadoperez and "Starry Skies, Blurry Dreams" by @henn_kim: "I started reading Invisible Women earlier this year and I’m looking forward to using the upcoming break to read more. This book highlights policies that may seem “neutral” because of the data used, but result in a more inequitable experience for most femmes. Reading it has been insightful because I’m becoming more aware of these day-to-day gendered disparities, allowing me to engage in more conversations about how I can step up. I’m also excited to sit down with this art book with a warm cup of tea :) Here's an early page because I wanted to preview something without spoiling myself too much." #crjereads #bookrecommendation
