Today, the Supreme Court has overturned Roe v Wade, opening the door to statewide bans that will harm Black people disproportionately. Reproductive justice is central to Black liberation, and any  limit on abortion access disproportionately harms Black women, girls, transgender, and gender non-conforming people.  Black women, girls, transgender, and gender non-conforming people have been subjected to a long history of reproductive control rooted in the brutal legacy of enslavement, and denying access to safe, legal abortion services is a continuation of that troubling history. Self-determination is a key pillar of Black power: the right to maintain our bodily autonomy and make decisions about our families – to have children, to not have children, and to parent the children we already have safely – is essential to our freedom.  Ultimately, our freedom comes from the movements we build, not courts. And as a Black liberation movement guided by Black feminist values and committed to abolition, we see the fall of Roe for what it is: another avenue for the state to criminalize and harm the most vulnerable among us. The fall of Roe is painful, but now is a time to stay vigilant and engaged. We have tools at our disposal to resist. This 2-day training provides all parents, guardians, and caregivers foundational context to effectively address issues of race and racism with children in their lives. We are currently recruiting student and staff part We are currently recruiting student and staff participants for our youth-adult partnership pilot program. Inspired by the legacies of Ella Baker and Octavia Butler, this program will utilize an arts-based pedagogical approach to target critical dialogue, creative expression, and youth-adult partnership, in order to advance racial justice in high school contexts. (2/2) As you may know, Michelle Wonsley-Ford resig (2/2) As you may know, Michelle Wonsley-Ford resigned from her position as Executive Director at the end of 2021. In nearly two years with the organization, Michelle led the organization with a deep commitment to our community. We deeply appreciate Michelle’s steadfastness, particularly in the face of both unprecedented uncertainty due to the pandemic alongside continued attacks on Black and Brown bodies, minds, and spirits in schools and streets across the U.S. and around the globe.  While the board of directors conducts a search for a new Executive Director, I have asked Nicole Rodriguez Leach, CRJE’s former board member and chair, to join the leadership team of the organization during this important period of transition. We are currently welcoming applications to the ED position, so please feel free to share the job description with your networks. (1/2) CRJE Community Message from our Board Chair: (1/2) CRJE Community Message from our Board Chair:  Dear CRJE Community:  As we settle fully into 2022, I wanted to share my gratitude for your support and partnership, as well as provide important updates for the organization. Like many of our peer organizations, the Center for Racial Justice in Education faced incredible uncertainty and loss in recent years, and we also experienced energizing rebounds and repair.  Today, CRJE’s programs are strong and growing, our staff and trainers are experts in their crafts, members of our board of directors and other advisors are engaged and generative stewards, our partnerships are expanding, and we are progressing from a place of stabilizing to a place of thriving.  This year marks CRJE’s 20th anniversary, including when we were known as Border Crossers. From a small, volunteer-run organization working exclusively with students in schools, to an organization with deep NYC roots as well as a national footprint serving educators in all places where children learn, CRJE is anchored by two decades of stellar leadership from five executive directors; the skilled facilitation, creativity, and persistence of nearly 100 employees and trainers; deeply committed board members; and an incredible constellation of interns, volunteers, school and district partners, nonprofit clients, advisors, and donors.  We will celebrate this milestone anniversary throughout the year and look forward to a time when we can gather again safely to do so in person. Until then, please look out for acknowledgements, (virtual) activities, and an ask in the coming months.
CRJE is looking for a new Executive Director to le CRJE is looking for a new Executive Director to lead our organization, now in its 20th year.  Racial injustice is embedded in our nation's history, implemented in our policies and practices, and even now, racist language is part of the commonplace rhetoric of many leaders. This consistently affects all our children, with many teachers uncomfortable and unprepared, and some under threat, to address race and racism in their classrooms. Beyond that, few school systems provide ongoing, specific professional development to give educators the tools they need to guide their students through these turbulent times.  In recent years, CRJE has rapidly evolved in response to the overall increase in local and national racially conscious conversations and the growing demand for racial justice in schools and schooling. This has resulted in exciting partnerships with school districts, major foundations, and expanded programming.  Today, CRJE is looking for a dynamic, passionate, and collaborative Executive Director who is a field leader, advocate, and spokesperson for racial justice and coalition building to lead the Center. Ideal candidates are energized to operate in complex and complicated environments. They also excel in managing change in a fast-paced social, political, and cultural landscape, and bring significant experience in organization building and advancement.  Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will set and implement the strategic vision and model, continue building the organization’s infrastructure, team and culture, expand and diversify philanthropic revenue opportunities, oversee the strengthening of CRJE’s programming, and lead and support a diverse and multi-racial team currently of three full-time staff, several external consultants, and roughly 50 national trainers who work on the frontlines for racial justice in education. We are so thrilled to have you on board, Lawrenzo! We are so thrilled to have you on board, Lawrenzo!  As the Program Coordinator, Lawrenzo supports the planning and execution of CRJE trainings and supports clients through the Racial Justice in Organizations program. He joins us from the Queens Library where he has most recently served as a Case Manager with the Adult Learner Program. Lawrenzo has experience in project management, training, partnership development, and data management. Lawrenzo’s experience includes being responsible for the ground-level implementation of grants, including service delivery, scheduling workshops and meetings, maintaining data records, creating reports, and case management staff supervision.  In addition, he supports internal departments and external partner organizations by conducting workshops of various topics for over 200 learners annually. Finally, he supports participants by working with partners and relevant organizations to provide additional appropriate services.  Lawrenzo holds an MPA from Marxe School of Public and International Affairs: Bernard M. Baruch College and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Macaulay Honors College at Queens College.  We’re excited to continue expanding our team and capacity, thanks to the support of our community throughout this past year. CRJE is hiring for an Executive Coach! The RJIO E CRJE is hiring for an Executive Coach!  The RJIO Executive Coach will work with the CRJE team and school leaders to drive systemic change by creating and developing a shared vision of what excellent instruction grounded in racial equity looks like. We are seeking a strong, empathetic communicator with deep subject matter expertise and experience in adult learning and leadership development.  This position is hourly and remote through June 2022 and possibly beyond. Candidates should be available for occasional in-person team meetings and a possible return to the office in New York City.  Compensation: $150-$250/hour for 1:1 coaching sessions, commensurate with prior coaching experience; $50/hr for administrative and internal meetings. CRJE is hiring for a Managing Director! The Manag CRJE is hiring for a Managing Director!  The Managing Director of Finance and Administration will primarily be responsible for leading internal operations related to finance and administration and serving as a strategic partner to the ED and Board of Directors. We are seeking both a strategic visionary as well as tactical operations leader, with deep financial management subject matter expertise.  This position is full-time and remote through August 2022 and possibly beyond. Candidates should be available for occasional in-person team meetings and a possible return to the office in New York City.  Compensation for the MD of Finance and Administration role is up to $130,000.
